PSU fan up or down? If your PC case features a bottom ventilation cutout with a dust filter, you should install the power supply with the fan facing down. This allows the PSU to pull in fresh, cool air from outside the case. However, if your case has a solid bottom panel, or if you plan to place your PC on a thick carpet, you must install the PSU with the fan facing up to draw air from inside the chassis.

Installing a power supply unit (PSU) seems straightforward until you are holding the heavy metal brick, looking at the fan grille, and wondering which way it goes. Getting this orientation wrong is one of the most common beginner PC building mistakes, and while it rarely causes immediate system failure, it can significantly degrade your power supply's lifespan and increase your overall system temperatures. In this comprehensive guide, we will break down exactly how PSU airflow works, when you should point the fan up or down, and how this single decision impacts your entire gaming rig.

Understanding Power Supply Airflow: How Does a PSU Breathe?

Before deciding which way to face your power supply, you need to understand how it cools itself. A power supply generates a significant amount of heat during operation, especially when converting high-wattage AC power from your wall into the DC power your CPU and graphics card require.

Almost all modern standard ATX power supplies utilize a simple, unidirectional airflow design:

Because the PSU exhausts air directly out the back of the case, the orientation of the intake fan is the only variable you need to control. Your goal is simply to provide that intake fan with the coolest, least restrictive air source possible.

The Fan-Down Configuration: The Modern Standard

For 95% of modern PC builds, the correct orientation is

If you look at the bottom of almost any contemporary mid-tower or full-tower gaming case, you will see a perforated ventilation grid directly beneath the PSU mounting bracket, usually covered by a removable dust filter.

When you mount the PSU with the fan facing down, you create an isolated thermal zone. The power supply breathes independently from the rest of your system. It sucks in cool room-temperature air from underneath the case, uses it to cool its internal components, and exhausts it out the back.

This means your PSU never has to process the hot air generated by your overclocked processor or flagship graphics card. By running on cooler ambient air, the PSU's internal fan doesn't need to spin as fast, resulting in a quieter system and a longer lifespan for the power supply's internal capacitors.

You should only use the fan-down orientation if your PC case sits on a hard, flat surface (like a wooden desk, tile, or hardwood floor) and has at least half an inch of clearance underneath. If the case feet are too short, the fan will choke.

The Fan-Up Configuration: When is it Mandatory?

While fan-down is the standard, there are three specific scenarios where installing your PSU with the

is absolutely necessary to prevent hardware failure.

If you place your PC on a plush carpet, the case feet will sink into the fabric. The carpet will act as a physical plug, completely sealing off the bottom ventilation holes. Worse, the PSU fan will act like a vacuum cleaner, sucking dense carpet fibers and extreme amounts of dust directly into the power supply. This is a severe fire hazard and a guaranteed way to kill your PSU. If your PC must live on the carpet, flip the PSU so the fan faces up.

Some older cases, budget chassis, or specialized silent PC cases do not have ventilation holes on the bottom panel. If you point your PSU fan down against a solid sheet of steel, the fan will be completely suffocated. It will overheat rapidly and likely trigger its Over Temperature Protection (OTP), shutting your PC down mid-game.

Many high-end power supplies feature a "Zero RPM" or hybrid mode, where the fan doesn't spin until the unit reaches a specific temperature or load. Because heat naturally rises, some manufacturers recommend installing the PSU with the fan facing up if you run it in passive mode. This allows the radiant heat to naturally escape upward through the fan grille into the case, rather than getting trapped against the bottom panel. However, this is highly specific to the manufacturer, so always consult your manual.

Does a Fan-Up PSU Steal Air from the GPU?

A common fear among PC builders is that mounting the PSU with the fan facing up will disrupt the airflow of the graphics card. Since modern GPUs pull air upward into their heatsinks, won't an upward-facing PSU fan fight the GPU for cool air?

In modern cases equipped with a PSU shroud (the metal tunnel covering the power supply and hard drives), this isn't a major issue, provided the top of the shroud is heavily perforated. The PSU will pull

a small amount of air from the main chamber

, but it rarely creates enough negative pressure to starve a graphics card.

However, if your case lacks a PSU shroud and your graphics card sits very close to the power supply, having the PSU fan face up

result in the two components fighting for the same air pocket. Furthermore, the PSU will be forced to inhale the radiant heat coming off the GPU, causing the power supply to run significantly hotter. This is why, unless restricted by carpet or a solid bottom panel, isolating the PSU with a fan-down orientation is always preferred.

While bottom-mounted PSUs have been the industry standard for over a decade, some modern small form factor (SFF) cases, Micro-ATX cases, and legacy office towers still use a top-mounted PSU layout.

If your case requires the PSU to be mounted at the very top, the rules change:

Conclusion: Build Smart, Cool Efficiently

Deciding whether your PSU fan should face up or down doesn't require a degree in thermodynamics. Just look at your environment and your case design. If you have a bottom dust filter and a hard desk surface, face the fan down. If you are building on a carpet or have a solid metal floor, face it up.

To make the build process effortless and ensure maximum hardware longevity, it pays to invest in components designed with modern airflow dynamics in mind. Brands like darkFlash engineer their chassis—such as the DY470 and FLOATRON series—with elevated case feet, ultra-fine bottom dust filters, and ventilated PSU shrouds, giving you the freedom to mount your PSU in whichever orientation suits your environment. Pair this with a highly efficient ATX 3.1 power supply, and you guarantee a system that runs cool, quiet, and reliable for years to come.

The Intake: The large fan on the top (or bottom) of the unit acts as an intake. It pulls ambient air into the PSU housing, blowing it directly over the hot internal capacitors, chokes, and heatsinks.

The Exhaust: The hot air is then forced out through the honeycomb mesh on the back of the unit (where the power switch and cable plug are located), expelling the heat entirely outside of your PC case.

Because the PSU exhausts air directly out the back of the case, the orientation of the intake fan is the only variable you need to control. Your goal is simply to provide that intake fan with the coolest, least restrictive air source possible.

The Fan-Down Configuration: The Modern Standard

For 95% of modern PC builds, the correct orientation is fan facing down.

If you look at the bottom of almost any contemporary mid-tower or full-tower gaming case, you will see a perforated ventilation grid directly beneath the PSU mounting bracket, usually covered by a removable dust filter.

Why Fan-Down is the Best Choice

When you mount the PSU with the fan facing down, you create an isolated thermal zone. The power supply breathes independently from the rest of your system. It sucks in cool room-temperature air from underneath the case, uses it to cool its internal components, and exhausts it out the back.

This means your PSU never has to process the hot air generated by your overclocked processor or flagship graphics card. By running on cooler ambient air, the PSU's internal fan doesn't need to spin as fast, resulting in a quieter system and a longer lifespan for the power supply's internal capacitors.

The Golden Rule for Fan-Down

You should only use the fan-down orientation if your PC case sits on a hard, flat surface (like a wooden desk, tile, or hardwood floor) and has at least half an inch of clearance underneath. If the case feet are too short, the fan will choke.

The Fan-Up Configuration: When is it Mandatory?

While fan-down is the standard, there are three specific scenarios where installing your PSU with the fan facing up is absolutely necessary to prevent hardware failure.

Your PC Sits on Thick Carpet

If you place your PC on a plush carpet, the case feet will sink into the fabric. The carpet will act as a physical plug, completely sealing off the bottom ventilation holes. Worse, the PSU fan will act like a vacuum cleaner, sucking dense carpet fibers and extreme amounts of dust directly into the power supply. This is a severe fire hazard and a guaranteed way to kill your PSU. If your PC must live on the carpet, flip the PSU so the fan faces up.

Your Case Has a Solid Bottom Panel

Some older cases, budget chassis, or specialized silent PC cases do not have ventilation holes on the bottom panel. If you point your PSU fan down against a solid sheet of steel, the fan will be completely suffocated. It will overheat rapidly and likely trigger its Over Temperature Protection (OTP), shutting your PC down mid-game.

Fanless (Zero RPM) Mode Considerations

Many high-end power supplies feature a "Zero RPM" or hybrid mode, where the fan doesn't spin until the unit reaches a specific temperature or load. Because heat naturally rises, some manufacturers recommend installing the PSU with the fan facing up if you run it in passive mode. This allows the radiant heat to naturally escape upward through the fan grille into the case, rather than getting trapped against the bottom panel. However, this is highly specific to the manufacturer, so always consult your manual.

This is why, unless restricted by carpet or a solid bottom panel, isolating the PSU with a fan-down orientation is always preferred.

What About Top-Mounted Power Supplies?

While bottom-mounted PSUs have been the industry standard for over a decade, some modern small form factor (SFF) cases, Micro-ATX cases, and legacy office towers still use a top-mounted PSU layout.

If your case requires the PSU to be mounted at the very top, the rules change:

Fan Facing Down (Toward the CPU): This is the traditional setup for top-mounted PSUs. The power supply acts as an exhaust fan, pulling hot air away from the CPU cooler and venting it out the back. While this helps case airflow, it forces the PSU to ingest extremely hot air, which can reduce its efficiency.

Fan Facing Up (Toward the Ceiling): You can only do this if the top panel of your PC case has ventilation holes. If it does, the PSU can pull fresh air from the top of the case, operating in its own isolated thermal zone just like a bottom-mounted setup.

PSU Fan Up or Down? The Definitive Power Supply Orientation Guide

Do PC case dust filters reduce airflow? Yes, they absolutely do. Placing any physical barrier—especially a dense mesh—in front of your intake fans will reduce airflow by 10% to 30%, depending on the filter's material and your fan's static pressure capabilities.

However, removing your dust filters to chase a minor 2°C to 5°C temperature drop is a common beginner mistake. Without a filter, the long-term dust buildup on your internal heatsinks will quickly act as a thermal insulator, eventually causing far worse overheating and severe thermal throttling.

For PC builders who want maximum performance without having to deep-clean their components every month, finding the balance between airflow restriction and dust prevention is critical.

In this comprehensive guide, we will break down exactly how much performance you lose to different types of dust filters, the specific fans you need to overcome this resistance, and how to maintain a high-performance system that stays pristine on the inside.

How Much Airflow Do You Actually Lose to a Filter?

Whenever a spinning fan blade attempts to pull air through a stationary object, it encounters airflow impedance. Because dust filters are engineered to trap microscopic household particles, their mesh structure is inherently dense. This density increases air turbulence and forces the fan to work harder, resulting in a drop in the overall volume of air entering your case (measured in CFM, or Cubic Feet per Minute).

The severity of this airflow reduction heavily depends on the filter's design and material:

These are the most common secondary filters found behind the front panels of mid-tower cases. Because the nylon threads are woven incredibly tight to catch pet dander and fine household dust, they present the highest level of airflow restriction. A standard case fan can lose up to 30% of its intake volume when forced to pull air through a fine nylon filter.

Typically located on the top exhaust or bottom power supply intake, these flexible magnetic sheets feature stamped circular or hexagonal holes. They are excellent at stopping larger debris like pet hair, but fine dust can still slip through. Because the holes are larger, they only reduce airflow by roughly 15% to 20%.

Modern high-airflow cases have revolutionized dust defense by ditching the restrictive secondary nylon filters entirely. Instead, the exterior front panel is made of a fine metal mesh with holes roughly 1mm to 1.5mm in diameter. This acts as both the structural panel and the dust filter. Airflow restriction is minimal (often below 10%), while still catching the vast majority of harmful debris.

Static Pressure vs. Airflow Fans: Overcoming the Resistance

If dust filters inherently restrict airflow, how do PC enthusiasts keep their high-end CPUs and GPUs cool? The secret lies in selecting the correct type of intake fan. Case fans are not universally identical; they are generally divided into two categories based on their blade geometry: Airflow fans and Static Pressure fans.

These fans typically feature multiple narrow, heavily angled blades designed to move a massive volume of air (high CFM) in an open, unrestricted environment. They are perfect for serving as rear or top exhaust fans. However, if you place an airflow fan directly behind a dense dust filter, it will choke. The air hits the restrictive mesh, stalls, and often deflects backward around the edges of the fan frame instead of entering the case.

If your case utilizes dense dust filters, static pressure fans are mandatory. These fans feature wider, thicker blades with minimal gaps between them. They are specifically engineered to forcefully push or pull air through highly restrictive barriers, such as liquid cooling radiators, dense CPU heatsinks, and thick dust filters. While their raw CFM rating might look lower on a spec sheet, their ability to maintain airflow through a barrier (measured in mmH₂O) makes them vastly superior for filtered front intakes.

Swapping out cheap stock fans for high static pressure models is the most effective way to regain the cooling performance lost to a dust filter.

The Short-Term Gain vs. The Long-Term Thermal Trap

Let’s examine the real-world temperature impact. If you remove the front dust filter on a gaming PC while running a heavy load—like benchmarking Cyberpunk 2077 or rendering a 4K video—you will likely observe an immediate temperature drop on both your CPU and GPU.

Typically, removing a highly restrictive filter results in a temperature decrease of roughly 2°C to 5°C. For extreme competitive overclockers trying to set world records, that 5-degree margin matters. But for 99% of gamers and creators, a graphics card running at 72°C instead of 68°C makes absolutely zero difference in frame rates, component lifespan, or system stability. Modern silicon will not begin to thermal throttle until it hits much higher thresholds (usually between 89°C and 95°C).

The real danger of removing your filter is the long-term consequence. Without a filter, airborne dust, fabric fibers, and pet dander are sucked directly into your chassis. This debris doesn't just settle on the floor of the case; it gets rammed into the tightly packed aluminum fin stacks of your CPU tower cooler and your graphics card.

Within a few months, this dust forms a thick, felt-like blanket over the heatsinks. Dust is an exceptional thermal insulator. A heatsink caked in dust cannot transfer heat to the surrounding air. If a clean dust filter costs you 3°C of thermal performance today, a dust-clogged GPU heatsink will easily cost you 15°C to 20°C six months from now—leading to deafening fan noise, severe thermal throttling, and sudden FPS drops.

How to Optimize Airflow While Using Dust Filters

You do not have to choose between a clean PC and a cool PC. By implementing a few strategic building techniques, you can minimize the impact of your dust filters while maximizing thermal performance.

To keep dust out of your system, you must configure your fans to create positive air pressure. This means your intake fans are pulling more air into the case than your exhaust fans are pushing out (for example, utilizing three 120mm intake fans and only two 120mm exhaust fans).

Positive pressure ensures that excess air is constantly seeping

of the unfiltered cracks, PCIe slot covers, and seams of your PC case, physically preventing dust from being sucked in through unfiltered gaps.

Because the dust filter acts as a physical muffler for acoustics, you can often run your intake fans slightly faster without increasing the perceived noise level of your PC. Go into your motherboard's BIOS and set a custom fan curve. Allow your static pressure intake fans to spin slightly faster at lower temperatures to compensate for the filter's resistance.

A dust filter only functions properly if it isn't clogged. A filter completely blocked by a layer of dust is far worse for your airflow than the filter itself. Make it a habit to wipe down or rinse your front and bottom intake filters every 4 to 6 weeks. If you have pets in the house, check them every 2 weeks.

So, do PC case dust filters reduce airflow? Yes, but the minor reduction in fresh air is heavily outweighed by the crucial protection they offer your expensive internal components. Sacrificing a few degrees of thermal headroom to prevent your heatsinks from becoming insulated with dust is a trade-off every smart PC builder should make.

The ultimate way to bypass the airflow penalty of traditional nylon dust filters is to choose a PC case that integrates the filter directly into its structural design. Hardware brands that prioritize advanced cooling dynamics have recognized this issue. For instance, the darkFlash FLOATRON F1 and the panoramic DY460 showcase cases are engineered with precision-perforated metal mesh panels. By utilizing fine metal meshes that act as both the structural exterior and the primary dust barrier, these designs eliminate the need for secondary, highly restrictive nylon filters.

You get the maximum possible airflow delivered directly to your components, striking the perfect balance between high-end thermal performance and long-term system cleanliness. Keep your filters on, utilize static pressure fans, and enjoy a PC that runs just as flawlessly on day 500 as it did on day one.

The Truth About PC Case Dust Filters: Do They Actually Ruin Your Airflow?

Tech News

Can bottom intake fans lower CPU temperatures? They can reduce the amount of hot GPU exhaust reaching the CPU cooler, but the widely reported 13°C improvement refers to cooler intake air in one simulation, not a guaranteed 13°C drop in CPU core temperature.

A recent computational fluid dynamics simulation from

has renewed the debate over traditional PC airflow. Its results suggest that adding fresh air from the bottom of a gaming PC may reduce heat recirculation around the graphics card and CPU cooler.

The findings are interesting, especially for modern systems with large, high-power GPUs. However, they should be understood as the result of one simulated configuration rather than a universal rule for every PC case.

Why GPU Exhaust Can Raise CPU Cooler Intake Temperatures

The traditional gaming PC airflow layout uses front fans as intake, with rear and top fans exhausting warm air. This configuration is simple, widely supported, and still effective in many systems.

The potential problem is what happens after the incoming air passes through the graphics card. Most modern graphics cards draw air through their heatsinks and release the warmed air back inside the case. Part of that heat can rise toward the CPU area before reaching the rear or top exhaust fans.

In the standard configuration modeled by Inviscid AI, the air entering the case began at approximately 22°C. As the simulation continued, GPU exhaust accumulated around the upper portion of the case, and the air reaching the tower CPU cooler reportedly rose to approximately 35°C.

This does not mean the CPU itself reached only 35°C. It means the CPU cooler was attempting to remove processor heat while drawing in air that was already considerably warmer than the room.

What the 13°C Bottom Intake Result Actually Means

Inviscid AI then simulated an alternative configuration that supplied ambient air from the bottom of the case. This upward airflow delivered cooler air more directly toward the graphics card and helped move GPU exhaust toward the case’s exhaust openings.

Under the conditions used in the simulation:

The important distinction is that these figures describe

air temperature at specific measurement locations

. They do not prove that the processor’s package or core temperature will fall by the same amount.

Cooler design, CPU power consumption, fan speed, thermal paste, ambient temperature, GPU cooler orientation, and case geometry will determine how much of that cooler intake air translates into lower component temperatures. Other coverage of the simulation has raised the same qualification: the result is promising, but it is not a guaranteed improvement for every PC.

One analysis of the simulation explains the limitation here

How OpenReynolds Uses AI for PC Airflow Simulation

, an open-source project that combines an AI agent with a real OpenFOAM computational fluid dynamics workspace.

Traditional CFD analysis requires engineers to define the geometry, divide the space into a computational mesh, select appropriate solvers, configure boundary conditions, monitor convergence, and interpret the results. The calculations still come from a numerical physics solver, but preparing and managing the workflow can require considerable specialist knowledge.

, users can describe the geometry, fluid, speed, and measurement goal. The agent then helps create the case, generate the mesh, launch the OpenFOAM solver, read residuals, inspect rendered results, and return the relevant files.

This does not mean AI is guessing the temperature distribution or replacing fluid dynamics with an image generator. The AI manages the workflow, while OpenFOAM performs the numerical calculation. The results still depend on the accuracy of the geometry, heat loads, fan curves, boundary conditions, turbulence model, mesh quality, and convergence.

For that reason, CFD is valuable for comparing airflow concepts, but physical measurements inside a real PC remain necessary before treating a simulated temperature difference as a confirmed product benchmark.

Should You Add Bottom Intake Fans to Your Gaming PC?

when the fans have a clear path to the graphics card. Panoramic and dual-chamber cases commonly use this layout because their glass front panels do not provide conventional front intake airflow.

Before adding bottom fans, check the following:

More fans do not automatically produce better temperatures. A bottom fan positioned against a solid panel, thick cable bundle, or restrictive filter may deliver very little usable airflow. Excessive turbulence can also reduce efficiency or increase noise.

Cases designed around bottom and side intake provide more flexibility. For example, the global

supports three 120 mm fans at the bottom, two at the side, three at the top, and one at the rear. This allows builders to create a direct bottom-to-GPU airflow path while using the top and rear positions for exhaust.

Users should still test their own system. Record CPU and GPU temperatures, hotspot readings, fan speeds, and noise under the same workload before and after changing the fan configuration. Real measurements are more useful than assuming a specific simulation result will apply unchanged.

Final Thoughts: Is Bottom Intake Better Than Traditional Airflow?

Bottom intake can be highly effective in modern gaming PCs because it supplies fresh air directly beneath the graphics card and may reduce the amount of GPU exhaust recirculating into the CPU cooler.

However, the reported 13°C result should be described accurately. It was a difference in simulated CPU cooler intake-air temperature under a specific set of conditions, not a measured 13°C reduction in CPU core temperature and not a promise for every PC.

The practical lesson is not that traditional front-to-back airflow has suddenly become obsolete. It is that airflow should match the internal layout of the case. Conventional mesh-front cases may continue to perform well with front intake, while panoramic cases and systems with large GPUs may benefit more from bottom and side intake.

Choose a case with unobstructed fan mounts, adequate underside clearance, removable dust filters, and enough exhaust capacity. Then verify the result with your own temperature and noise testing rather than relying on fan direction alone.

Can bottom intake fans lower CPU temperatures? They can reduce the amount of hot GPU exhaust reaching the CPU cooler, but the widely reported 13°C improvement refers to cooler intake air in one simulation, not a guaranteed 13°C drop in CPU core temperature.

A recent computational fluid dynamics simulation from Inviscid AI has renewed the debate over traditional PC airflow.

CPU cooler intake air remained close to the 22°C ambient temperature.

The conventional configuration produced CPU cooler intake air of approximately 35°C.

The resulting difference was as much as 13°C.

Air below the graphics card was reportedly reduced from approximately 30°C to 26°C.

The important distinction is that these figures describe air temperature at specific measurement locations.

One analysis of the simulation explains the limitation here.

How OpenReynolds Uses AI for PC Airflow Simulation

The experiment was created with OpenReynolds, an open-source project that combines an AI agent with a real OpenFOAM computational fluid dynamics workspace.

According to the official OpenReynolds repository, users can describe the geometry, fluid, speed, and measurement goal. The agent then helps create the case, generate the mesh, launch the OpenFOAM solver, read residuals, inspect rendered results, and return the relevant files.

(OpenReynolds GitHub)

Bottom intake is most useful when the fans have a clear path to the graphics card. Panoramic and dual-chamber cases commonly use this layout because their glass front panels do not provide conventional front intake airflow.

Before adding bottom fans, check the following:

The case must have compatible bottom fan mounts.

There should be enough clearance below the case for air to enter.

A dust filter should cover the bottom intake.

Cables and the power-supply chamber must not obstruct airflow.

The GPU should have enough space above the fans.

Top and rear exhaust capacity should be sufficient to remove the added air.

Fan curves should be adjusted to balance cooling and noise.

For example, the global darkFlash FLOATRON F1 ATX PC Case supports three 120 mm fans at the bottom, two at the side, three at the top, and one at the rear.

(darkFlash FLOATRON F1 ATX PC Case)

An AI-assisted CFD simulation suggests bottom intake fans can reduce the temperature of air reaching a CPU cooler by as much as 13°C. Here is what the result actually means for real gaming PCs.

Do modern AIO liquid coolers still leak? Yes, leaks remain possible, but

they are uncommon in properly manufactured, installed, and handled coolers

Unlike custom liquid-cooling loops, an All-in-One liquid cooler arrives as a factory-sealed system with the pump, radiator, tubing, and fittings already assembled. Users do not normally need to add coolant, tighten fittings, or perform regular fluid maintenance. This greatly reduces the number of potential failure points, although no liquid-cooling product can promise absolutely zero risk.

Why Modern AIO Liquid Coolers Are Less Likely to Leak

Modern AIO liquid coolers use sealed fittings, reinforced tubing, and integrated pump-and-radiator designs that require very little user maintenance. Because the loop is assembled at the factory, there are also fewer user-installed connections than in a custom cooling loop.

Manufacturers have continued improving tube materials, seals, and connection points to withstand heat, pressure changes, and repeated thermal cycles. For example, the

uses synthetic tubing designed to resist high temperatures and pressure.

However, “low risk” should not be confused with “leak-proof.” Manufacturing defects, physical damage, and material aging can still cause a sealed cooler to fail. There is also no reliable industry-wide leak percentage covering every AIO brand and model, so any universal failure-rate claim should be treated carefully.

What Causes an AIO Liquid Cooler to Leak?

A leak can begin with a manufacturing defect, but external damage and incorrect handling are also possible causes. A severe impact during shipping, a cracked fitting, or excessive force applied to the tubing may compromise the sealed loop.

There is no universal age at which every liquid cooler becomes unsafe. Cooler lifespan varies with product quality, operating temperature, usage, storage conditions, and pump wear. Instead of replacing an AIO after an arbitrary number of years, monitor its temperatures, pump speed, noise, tubing condition, and warranty coverage.

Inspect the cooler before installation. Look for moisture, oily residue, damaged fittings, crushed radiator fins, or visible cracks around the pump housing. If anything appears suspicious, do not install or power the cooler.

During installation, avoid forcing the tubes into an unnatural angle. The tubing should form a smooth curve without pressing against a sharp case edge. Secure the radiator and pump block properly so their weight does not place additional stress on the fittings.

The radiator should also be positioned according to the manufacturer’s instructions. In most systems, the pump should not be the highest point in the loop because trapped air can enter the pump and cause noise or reduced cooling performance. Bubbling does not automatically mean the cooler is leaking, but persistent pump noise or rapidly increasing CPU temperatures should be investigated.

What Should You Do If an AIO Starts Leaking?

If you see liquid or unexplained residue around the pump, tubes, or radiator fittings, shut the computer down immediately. Switch off the power supply and disconnect the system from the wall before touching the affected area.

Do not restart the PC simply to test whether it still works. Photograph the leak, check which components were exposed, and contact the cooler manufacturer or retailer for warranty assistance. The affected hardware should be completely dry and professionally inspected before power is restored.

Do not attempt to repair a sealed AIO by opening the pump, adding coolant, or applying household sealant. These actions can introduce contamination, damage the pump, and invalidate the warranty.

Final Thoughts: Are AIO Liquid Coolers Safe?

For most gaming PCs and creator workstations, a modern AIO liquid cooler is safe when it comes from a reputable manufacturer and is installed correctly. Its factory-sealed design requires less maintenance and has fewer user-assembled connections than a custom liquid-cooling loop.

When choosing a cooler, compare more than radiator size and RGB lighting. Check the tubing construction, socket compatibility, case clearance, warranty terms, and installation instructions. The global

includes multiple radiator sizes and designs for different processors, cases, and performance requirements.

A leak can never be ruled out completely, but careful installation, regular visual checks, and proper handling can keep the risk low. For most users, cooling performance, pump longevity, installation clearance, and warranty support are more practical considerations than fear of an unexpected leak.

should beginners use? PLA is usually the easiest material to start with, while PETG, ABS, and TPU are better suited to projects that require greater durability, heat resistance, or flexibility.

Choosing filament is not simply about finding the cheapest spool or the best-looking color. Every material behaves differently when heated and offers a different balance of strength, flexibility, surface quality, temperature resistance, and printing difficulty.

This beginner-friendly guide explains the differences between the most common 3D printing materials and helps you choose the right filament for your first project.

Filament is the material used by FFF or FDM 3D printers. The printer feeds a thin strand of thermoplastic into a heated nozzle, melts it, and deposits it layer by layer until the model is complete.

, with 1.75 mm being more common among modern desktop printers. The correct diameter depends entirely on the printer, so beginners should always check compatibility before purchasing a spool.

also notes that printing results depend on the material, nozzle, enclosure, build plate, model geometry, and print settings.

Filament should not be confused with liquid resin. Resin printers use UV light to cure liquid material and require different handling, washing, protective equipment, and ventilation. For beginners interested in practical household or PC-related projects, filament printing is generally the more straightforward starting point.

PLA vs. PETG vs. ABS vs. TPU: Material Differences and Properties

The easiest way to select a filament is to understand what each material does well.

is the most practical first spool for beginners. It prints reliably, produces detailed surfaces, and is less prone to warping. It works well for display models, desk organizers, cable guides, case decorations, and early prototypes. Its biggest weakness is relatively low heat resistance, so it should not be used close to hot PC components or in other high-temperature environments.

is a useful next step when PLA is not durable enough. It offers good layer adhesion, toughness, water resistance, and better temperature resistance. PETG is suitable for functional brackets, stronger cable clips, tool holders, and parts that may experience light impacts. However, it can be more prone to thin strings between printed areas and may require additional tuning.

offers greater heat resistance and durability, making it useful for more demanding functional parts. The trade-off is a more difficult printing process: ABS can warp as it cools and generally prints better inside an enclosed machine. It also requires appropriate ventilation.

is a flexible, rubber-like filament commonly used for protective covers, anti-slip feet, vibration-damping parts, cable grommets, and soft grips. According to

, flexible materials generally benefit from slower printing and a direct-drive extruder. TPU is useful, but it is not usually the best material for someone’s first test print.

How to Choose the Right Filament for Your Project

Instead of asking which filament is universally best, ask what the finished part needs to do.

For PC and desk setups, common projects can include:

Printed parts should not automatically be treated as replacements for certified PC components. Avoid using ordinary hobby filament for power connectors, electrical insulation, fire barriers, heavy load-bearing hardware, or parts placed directly beside high-temperature components. Material selection is important, but model design, wall thickness, infill, layer direction, and print quality also affect the strength of the finished part.

Key Factors to Check Before Buying Filament: Printer Requirements and Specs

Start by confirming the required filament diameter. A 1.75 mm printer cannot use 2.85 mm filament without major hardware changes, even if the material itself is compatible.

Next, check the filament manufacturer’s recommended nozzle and build-plate temperatures. These settings vary between material formulations, so generic temperature charts should only be treated as starting points. Using a built-in printer or slicer profile is usually easier for a first print.

The printer hardware matters as well. ABS generally benefits from an enclosure, while abrasive carbon-fiber, glass-fiber, glow-in-the-dark, or metal-filled filaments may require a hardened nozzle. These specialty materials are better left until the user understands basic printer calibration.

Ventilation should also be considered. Heated thermoplastics can release particles and volatile compounds during printing. The US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends using appropriate ventilation, lower-emission materials, enclosures, and manufacturer safety instructions to reduce exposure. PLA often produces fewer emissions than ABS, but no desktop printer should be operated continuously in a poorly ventilated sleeping or living area.

NIOSH provides additional safety guidance here

Finally, store unused filament in a sealed bag or dry box with desiccant. Moisture can cause stringing, bubbling, poor surfaces, and weak layer adhesion. TPU and nylon are particularly sensitive, although PLA and PETG can also develop printing problems after absorbing moisture.

Prusa recommends sealed storage and material-appropriate drying

Final Thoughts: Which 3D Printing Filament Should Beginners Start With?

because it is affordable, widely compatible, and forgiving during printer setup. Once the basic printing process is familiar, PETG is a logical second material for tougher and more functional parts.

ABS makes sense when heat resistance is genuinely necessary and the printer has an enclosure and suitable ventilation. TPU should be selected when flexibility is part of the design rather than simply because it looks interesting.

For PC builders, 3D printing creates plenty of room for customization, from cable-management accessories and desk organizers to prototypes and visual case modifications. The safest approach is to begin with simple PLA projects, understand the printer’s limitations, and move to more specialized materials only when the project actually requires them.

What Is 3D Printing Filament?

Filament is the material used by FFF or FDM 3D printers. The printer feeds a thin strand of thermoplastic into a heated nozzle, melts it, and deposits it layer by layer until the model is complete.

Most consumer filament comes in either 1.75 mm or 2.85 mm diameter, with 1.75 mm being more common among modern desktop printers. The correct diameter depends entirely on the printer, so beginners should always check compatibility before purchasing a spool. UltiMaker’s material guide also notes that printing results depend on the material, nozzle, enclosure, build plate, model geometry, and print settings.

For beginners interested in practical household or PC-related projects, filament printing is generally the more straightforward starting point.

PLA vs. PETG vs. ABS vs. TPU: Material Differences and Properties

The easiest way to select a filament is to understand what each material does well.

PLA (Polylactic Acid)

PLA is the most practical first spool for beginners. It prints reliably, produces detailed surfaces, and is less prone to warping. It works well for display models, desk organizers, cable guides, case decorations, and early prototypes. Its biggest weakness is relatively low heat resistance, so it should not be used close to hot PC components or in other high-temperature environments.

PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate modified by Glycol)

PETG is a useful next step when PLA is not durable enough. It offers good layer adhesion, toughness, water resistance, and better temperature resistance. PETG is suitable for functional brackets, stronger cable clips, tool holders, and parts that may experience light impacts. However, it can be more prone to thin strings between printed areas and may require additional tuning.

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)

ABS offers greater heat resistance and durability, making it useful for more demanding functional parts. The trade-off is a more difficult printing process: ABS can warp as it cools and generally prints better inside an enclosed machine. It also requires appropriate ventilation.

TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane)

TPU is a flexible, rubber-like filament commonly used for protective covers, anti-slip feet, vibration-damping parts, cable grommets, and soft grips. According to UltiMaker, flexible materials generally benefit from slower printing and a direct-drive extruder. TPU is useful, but it is not usually the best material for someone’s first test print.

How to Choose the Right Filament for Your Project

Instead of asking which filament is universally best, ask what the finished part needs to do.

Choose PLA
when appearance, dimensional accuracy, low cost, and ease of printing matter most. It is the sensible default for learning how to level the bed, adjust temperatures, slice models, and identify printing problems.

Choose PETG
when the part needs more toughness or may encounter moderate heat and moisture. It is often the most practical all-purpose material after beginners become comfortable with PLA.

Choose ABS
when temperature resistance and functional durability are important and the printer has an enclosure with appropriate ventilation. Beginners should confirm that their printer can reach the required nozzle and bed temperatures before buying it.

Choose TPU
when the part needs to bend, compress, absorb vibration, or provide grip. Check that the printer’s filament path and extruder are suitable for flexible materials.

For PC and desk setups, common projects can include:

Cable combs and cable-management clips

Headphone and controller stands

Keyboard accessories and switch organizers

Decorative case badges and display models

Anti-slip feet and soft protective corners

Prototype fan ducts or equipment brackets

Printed parts should not automatically be treated as replacements for certified PC components. Should you turn off memory integrity for gaming? For most gamers, the answer is no: leave Memory Integrity on. It usually costs only a few percent in frame rate, and it blocks a serious class of driver-based attacks.

The exceptions are competitive players who are CPU-bound, owners of older processors, and anyone using undervolting tools or hardware with incompatible drivers. If you fall into one of those groups, test your own games before deciding.

, that Windows quality updates will begin turning Memory Integrity on for eligible Windows 11 devices starting in October. The first update with the change is expected on Patch Tuesday, October 13, and the rollout will be gradual, so not every PC will get it at the same time.

Memory Integrity, also called Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI) and found under Core Isolation, uses virtualization to build an isolated space where Windows checks kernel code. It makes sure only verified kernel-mode code loads, which blocks unsigned rootkits and raises the barrier to driver-based kernel attacks.

The feature is not new. It already runs by default on clean Windows 11 installations and on Secured-core PCs. The October change targets the many PCs where it never got switched on, such as machines upgraded from Windows 10. If Virtualization-based Security (VBS) isn't already running, the same updates will enable that too.

Windows checks whether a PC is ready before it changes anything.

lists the requirements as an 8th-generation Intel Core or newer CPU or AMD Zen 2 or newer, at least 8GB of RAM, a 64GB SSD, virtualization enabled in firmware, and drivers confirmed compatible with Memory Integrity. One caveat is that 11th-generation Core desktop processors are not part of Microsoft's current default-enablement logic, although Microsoft still recommends the feature on that platform.

If you have already turned it off, Microsoft says it will respect that. Settings made through the registry, Group Policy, or Intune stay in place. Coverage varies on exactly how Windows recognizes a manual opt-out, so check your status after the update instead of assuming.

It depends on your CPU, your game, and whether the game is limited by CPU or GPU. The available tests, most of them older, point to a small average loss with larger drops in the worst frames.

The "up to 15%" headline traces back to the worst case. A 2021 ten-game test on a Core i7-12700KF found a 7% average deficit and a 15% deficit in 1% lows with VBS on, and it cautioned that more GPU-limited conditions could shrink the impact to around 5%. Treat 15% as a ceiling for specific CPU-bound situations, not what a typical gamer will see.

One more point. Microsoft acknowledged in 2022 that Memory Integrity and Virtual Machine Platform could affect gaming performance on some Windows 11 configurations, and it advised performance-focused gamers they could temporarily disable them, at the cost of security.

Consider turning it off only if at least one of these applies:

If you mostly play GPU-limited games at 1440p or 4K, you will likely never notice it.

Turning it off removes a kernel-level protection layer. XDA Developers warns against disabling it preemptively just to stop Windows from enabling it, because an attacker could exploit a vulnerable driver to gain kernel-level access to your PC. The risk is modest if you only install trusted software, but it is real, especially on a PC you also use for banking and work.

on a Secured-core PC takes the device out of a Secured-core state.

Don't turn it off on a hunch. Run the same game, scene, resolution, and graphics preset before and after toggling Memory Integrity, and compare both average frame rate and 1% lows. If the difference is negligible, leave it on.

How to Check or Turn Off Memory Integrity

Open Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Device security, then select Core isolation details under Core isolation. Use the

, then restart your PC for the change to take effect.

If the toggle is grayed out or reports a problem, an incompatible driver is the usual cause. Older anti-cheat software, RGB utilities, and hardware drivers are common culprits. Microsoft's guidance is to look for an updated driver from Windows Update or the manufacturer first, and to turn Memory Integrity off only if that doesn't work. Updating the driver is the better fix because it keeps both security and your hardware working.

Will Windows 11 turn on Memory Integrity automatically?

Yes, on eligible PCs. Microsoft is rolling it out gradually through quality updates starting in October 2026, and it respects existing opt-outs.

Sometimes. Typical losses in the tests above range from low single digits up to roughly 6–8% in CPU-limited cases, with worse 1% lows in some games.

It is safe enough for many careful users, but it removes a kernel-level protection that helps block malicious or vulnerable drivers. Weigh a measured FPS gain against that risk.

No. Memory Integrity is a feature that runs on top of VBS. Turning Memory Integrity on also turns VBS on.

Memory Integrity is a good default for most gaming PCs, and the FPS cost is usually small. Measure your own games, update any driver that blocks it, and turn it off only when you see a clear, repeatable loss in a CPU-bound title or when it conflicts with tools you need. This article will be updated after October 13 as real-world reports come in.

If you have already turned it off, Microsoft says it will respect that. Settings made through the registry, Group Policy, or Intune stay in place. Coverage varies on exactly how Windows recognizes a manual opt-out, so check your status after the update instead of assuming.

How Much FPS Does Memory Integrity Cost?

It depends on your CPU, your game, and whether the game is limited by CPU or GPU. The available tests, most of them older, point to a small average loss with larger drops in the worst frames.

Four-CPU test with an RTX 3090 at 1080p: One summary of Tom's Hardware testing puts the HVCI average loss between 3.3% and 5.7%, depending on the processor.

Why newer CPUs fare better: Tom's Hardware found that Mode Based Execution Control (MBEC) reduces HVCI's impact to nearly the level of VBS alone.

High-end GPU test: Tom's Hardware found that disabling VBS improved performance by around 10% in its RTX 4090 testing, with 1% lows rising by as much as 15%. The same piece put the average loss at about 5% and said many people with less extreme hardware will likely see low single-digit losses.

CPU-limited test: XDA Developers cited a Ryzen 7 5800X and Radeon RX 7900 XTX test at 1280×720 where HVCI reportedly cut average frame rate by 6% and worsened frame times by 8%.

Who Should Consider Turning It Off?

Consider turning it off only if at least one of these applies:

You play CPU-bound competitive games at very high frame rates. The overhead lands on the CPU, so esports titles on mid-range processors are where the loss shows up most.

You use an older CPU. The older the processor, the more likely it lacks the hardware features that reduce the penalty.

You rely on undervolting tools. Reports say Memory Integrity can interfere with undervolting tools such as ThrottleStop and Intel XTU.

An incompatible driver breaks a device you need. Windows will tell you which driver is the problem, and that is covered below.

If you mostly play GPU-limited games at 1440p or 4K, you will likely never notice it.

The Security Trade-Off

Turning it off removes a kernel-level protection layer. XDA Developers warns against disabling it preemptively just to stop Windows from enabling it, because an attacker could exploit a vulnerable driver to gain kernel-level access to your PC. The risk is modest if you only install trusted software, but it is real, especially on a PC you also use for banking and work.

Also note that turning Memory Integrity off on a Secured-core PC takes the device out of a Secured-core state.

How to Test It Before You Decide

Don't turn it off on a hunch. Run the same game, scene, resolution, and graphics preset before and after toggling Memory Integrity, and compare both average frame rate and 1% lows. If the difference is negligible, leave it on.

A practical method:

Pick a repeatable scene or the game's built-in benchmark.

Record three runs with a tool such as CapFrameX or PresentMon, and average them.

Turn Memory Integrity off, restart, and repeat.

Compare average FPS and 1% lows. A gain of under about 3–5% is usually not worth the lost protection.

How to Check or Turn Off Memory Integrity

Open Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Device security, then select Core isolation details under Core isolation. Use the toggle, then restart your PC for the change to take effect.

FAQ

Will Windows 11 turn on Memory Integrity automatically?

Yes, on eligible PCs. Microsoft is rolling it out gradually through quality updates starting in October 2026, and it respects existing opt-outs.

Does Memory Integrity lower FPS?

Sometimes. Typical losses in the tests above range from low single digits up to roughly 6–8% in CPU-limited cases, with worse 1% lows in some games.

Is it safe to turn off Memory Integrity?

It is safe enough for many careful users, but it removes a kernel-level protection that helps block malicious or vulnerable drivers. Weigh a measured FPS gain against that risk.

Is Memory Integrity the same as VBS?

No. Memory Integrity is a feature that runs on top of VBS. Turning Memory Integrity on also turns VBS on.

Conclusion

Memory Integrity is a good default for most gaming PCs, and the FPS cost is usually small. Measure your own games, update any driver that blocks it, and turn it off only when you see a clear, repeatable loss in a CPU-bound title or when it conflicts with tools you need. This article will be updated after October 13 as real-world reports come in.

Windows 11 is turning on Memory Integrity for more PCs in October. See the FPS cost, who should turn it off for gaming, and how to test it safely.

OVP vs UVP: Power Supply Voltage Protection Explained

OVP

OVP, or Over-Voltage Protection, activates when a PSU’s DC output voltage rises above a defined safety threshold. Excessive voltage on the 12V, 5V, or 3.3V rails can place connected components under electrical stress, so the PSU shuts down when the protection circuit detects an unsafe level.

UVP

UVP, or Under-Voltage Protection, responds when an output voltage falls below its permitted range. Components supplied with insufficient voltage may become unstable, restart, freeze, or stop operating correctly.

OVP monitors the PSU’s output voltage. It does not replace an external surge protector or UPS designed to handle problems coming from the wall outlet.

OCP vs OPP: Current and Total Power Protection

OCP

OCP, or Over-Current Protection, monitors how much electrical current passes through an output rail or circuit. It activates when current exceeds the protection threshold, helping reduce the risk of overloaded cables, connectors, and internal components.

OPP

OPP, or Over-Power Protection, monitors the PSU’s total output. It can shut the unit down when the complete system attempts to draw more power than the PSU can safely provide.

The distinction is simple: OCP responds to excessive current in a monitored output, while OPP responds to excessive total power draw. Their exact trigger points vary between PSU designs and are usually set above normal operating levels so brief, expected GPU power changes do not cause unnecessary shutdowns.

If a PC repeatedly turns off during gaming or rendering, OPP or OCP may be reacting to excessive load, incorrect cabling, a hardware fault, or an unsuitable PSU. Repeated protection trips should be investigated instead of treated as normal operation.

SCP and OTP: Short-Circuit and Overheating Protection

SCP

SCP, or Short-Circuit Protection, reacts when electricity finds an unintended low-resistance path. This can result from a damaged cable, faulty connector, loose conductive object, or failed component. The PSU cuts its output to prevent the fault from continuing through the system.

OTP

OTP, or Over-Temperature Protection, shuts down the PSU when its internal temperature reaches a preset limit. Possible causes include sustained overload, blocked ventilation, heavy dust buildup, excessive ambient temperature, or a failed cooling fan.

Intel’s power-supply design guidance defines both short-circuit shutdown and temperature-triggered shutdown as important protective behavior. After either protection activates, turn the computer off and inspect its external cables, ventilation, filters, and system load. Never open the PSU enclosure, because hazardous voltage can remain inside.

What Is NLP? No-Load Protection Explained

NLP

NLP, commonly called No-Load Protection and listed by darkFlash as Zero Load (NLP), covers situations where the power supply has little or no load connected to its DC outputs. Under this unusual condition, the PSU must remain electrically stable and avoid damage or hazardous behavior.

Intel’s power-supply design guidance states that a PSU should not become damaged or create a hazard when all DC output connectors are disconnected. Depending on the design, the power supply may continue operating safely or enter a shutdown state.

NLP should not be confused with zero RPM mode. NLP concerns electrical operation when there is no meaningful output load, while zero RPM mode simply stops the cooling fan when temperature and power demand are low.

The darkFlash PMT Series specifically lists Zero Load Protection alongside OVP, UVP, OCP, OPP, SCP, and OTP.

Final Thoughts: How to Choose a PSU With Proper Protections

A good PSU specification should clearly list OVP, UVP, OCP, OPP, SCP, OTP, and, where supported, NLP. These protections work together because no single circuit can cover every electrical or thermal fault. Correct wattage, stable voltage regulation, appropriate cables, component quality, warranty coverage, and independent testing also remain important.

The global darkFlash power supply lineup includes several product tiers with comprehensive protection features. The darkFlash PMT Series combines all seven protections with an ATX 3.1 design, full modular cabling, DC-to-DC conversion, and 80 PLUS Gold certification.

Protection features are designed for abnormal conditions, so they should remain a final safety layer rather than a feature the system regularly triggers. Choose enough capacity for the hardware, use only compatible power cables, and investigate repeated shutdowns promptly.
