What is the difference between AM4 and AM5? AM4 is AMD’s older Ryzen platform built around DDR4 memory, while AM5 is the newer Ryzen platform designed for DDR5, newer CPUs, and a longer upgrade path.

For gamers building a PC in 2026, this difference matters more than usual because memory prices are still under pressure. If DDR5 pricing makes a new build feel too expensive, AM4 can still be a budget-friendly option, especially for users who want to reuse or buy cheaper DDR4 memory.

AM4 and DDR4: Why It Still Makes Sense for Budget Builds

AM4 is no longer AMD’s newest platform, but it remains attractive for

. The biggest advantage is DDR4 support, which can help lower total platform cost when memory prices are rising. AM4 motherboards and Ryzen 5000-series CPUs are also widely available, making them easier to fit into a tight budget.

The tradeoff is future upgrade potential: AM4 has fewer modern platform features than AM5, and its CPU upgrade path is more limited. If your goal is affordable 1080p or 1440p gaming today, AM4 can still make sense. If you want a platform to upgrade for years, AM5 is the better long-term choice.

AM5 and DDR5: Better for New Builds, But More Expensive

better platform for a new high-end or long-term gaming PC

because it supports newer Ryzen CPUs, DDR5 memory, and modern motherboard features such as PCIe 5.0 on supported chipsets. It also gives builders a stronger future upgrade path than AM4.

The downside is cost. Since AM5 requires DDR5

users cannot simply buy cheaper DDR4 to reduce the build price. In 2026, with DRAM prices still affected by AI and data center demand, that extra memory cost can make AM5 feel less friendly for budget builders.

AM4 or AM5: What Should PC Builders Choose in 2026?

Choose AM4 if you want to save money, use cheaper DDR4, or build a gaming PC with the best value right now. Choose AM5 if you want better upgrade potential, newer CPU support, and a platform that will last longer.

The most important thing is to avoid mixing incompatible parts:

. You cannot install DDR4 memory on an AM5 motherboard, and you cannot install an AM5 CPU on an AM4 motherboard. Before buying, always match the CPU, motherboard, and RAM generation together.

Final Thoughts: Do Not Forget CPU Cooling

Whether you choose AM4 or AM5, the processor still needs proper cooling. The good news is that many modern CPU coolers support both platforms, and darkFlash AIO liquid coolers and air coolers are designed to support AM4 and AM5 builds.

That means users upgrading from AM4 to AM5, or building a new AMD gaming PC in 2026, do not need to worry about cooler compatibility when choosing the right darkFlash cooling solution. Pick AM4 for lower DDR4-based cost, pick AM5 for long-term upgrades, and make sure your CPU has the cooling it needs to perform reliably.

Hardware Tips

A 360mm AIO liquid cooler looks powerful. Three fans, a long radiator, RGB lighting, and a clean pump block can make any gaming PC feel high-end. But for many gamers, the bigger question is simple: do you actually need a 360mm AIO, or is a 240mm AIO already enough?

The short answer: most gaming PCs do not strictly need a 360mm AIO. A good 240mm AIO, 280mm AIO, or even a strong dual-tower air cooler can handle many modern gaming CPUs well. A 360mm AIO becomes more useful when you are cooling a high-power CPU, running heavy all-core workloads, building in a warm room, aiming for lower noise, or simply want the visual style of a large radiator build.

Let’s break down what cooler size really changes, when it matters, and how to choose the right AIO for your gaming PC.

What Does “240mm” or “360mm” AIO Actually Mean?

AIO cooler size usually refers to the radiator length and fan configuration.

A 240mm AIO typically uses two 120mm fans. A 360mm AIO uses three 120mm fans. You may also see 280mm AIOs, which use two 140mm fans, and 420mm AIOs, which use three 140mm fans.

The radiator is where heat from the CPU is transferred into the air. In general, a larger radiator has more surface area, which gives it more cooling potential. More radiator space also allows the fans to move air at lower speeds, which can reduce noise.

But “larger” does not automatically mean “better” in every build. Pump quality, radiator thickness, fan design, case airflow, mounting position, thermal paste, and CPU power behavior all affect final temperatures.

Why Gaming Usually Does Not Push CPUs Like Rendering Does

A common mistake is choosing a cooler based only on a CPU’s maximum power rating. Modern CPUs can draw a lot of power in stress tests or rendering workloads, but gaming is usually different.

Most games do not fully load every CPU core at 100 percent. Even demanding titles often stress a few threads heavily while the GPU does much of the work. That means a CPU may run cooler in real gaming than it does in synthetic benchmarks, video encoding, compiling code, or 3D rendering.

This is especially true if you play at 1440p or 4K, where the GPU usually becomes the main performance limit. In those situations, your CPU may not be producing enough heat to justify a massive radiator.

That is why a 360mm AIO can look impressive on paper but offer only a small gaming performance difference compared with a good 240mm or 280mm cooler.

A 240mm AIO is a practical choice for many gaming PCs. It fits more cases, costs less, is easier to install, and can cool a wide range of mainstream CPUs.

For CPUs like mainstream Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7, Core i5, and many Core i7-class gaming builds, a quality 240mm AIO can be a smart balance. It gives you liquid-cooling aesthetics and solid thermal performance without forcing you into a larger case or higher budget.

A 240mm radiator also gives you more flexibility. Many cases support 240mm radiators at the top or front, while 360mm support may be limited to the front panel only. That can matter if you want cleaner cable routing, better GPU airflow, or a top-mounted exhaust setup.

A 360mm AIO is not just for show. It can be the right choice in the right system.

High-end chips such as Ryzen 9 and Core Ultra 9-class CPUs can benefit from stronger cooling, especially outside pure gaming. Recent enthusiast CPUs can draw significant power in demanding workloads, and large AIOs help keep temperatures and noise more controlled.

A 360mm AIO can also help with acoustic comfort. Because it has more radiator surface area, the fans may not need to spin as fast to handle the same heat load. The result may not always be dramatically lower temperatures, but the PC can sound calmer during long sessions.

240mm vs 360mm AIO: Will You Get More FPS?

A better CPU cooler can improve performance if your CPU is thermal throttling. Thermal throttling happens when the CPU gets too hot and reduces clock speed to protect itself. In that case, upgrading your cooler can restore lost performance.

But if your CPU is already running within safe temperature limits, moving from a 240mm AIO to a 360mm AIO may not increase FPS in a meaningful way. You might see lower temperatures, quieter fans, or slightly higher boost behavior, but it will not turn a mid-range CPU into a flagship gaming chip.

For most gamers, GPU choice, monitor resolution, RAM configuration, and game settings usually affect FPS more than jumping from a 240mm to a 360mm radiator.

So, Do You Really Need a 360mm AIO for Gaming?

For most gaming PCs, no. A 360mm AIO is nice to have, not mandatory.

A good 240mm AIO is enough for many mainstream gaming CPUs. A 280mm AIO can be an excellent middle ground. A 360mm AIO makes the most sense for high-end CPUs, quiet builds, heavy multitasking, content creation, or showcase PCs where the larger radiator is part of the design.

The best cooler is not always the biggest one. It is the one that fits your CPU, case, noise target, budget, and build style.

A 360mm AIO can be a great cooler, but it is not a requirement for every gaming PC. If your CPU is not thermal throttling, a larger radiator may give you better temperatures and lower noise, but not necessarily more FPS.

Before buying, check your CPU power needs, case radiator support, GPU clearance, and airflow path. A well-planned 240mm AIO build will often outperform a poorly planned 360mm setup.

For gaming, smart cooling beats oversized cooling.

When a 240mm AIO Is Enough

A 240mm AIO is a practical choice for many gaming PCs. It fits more cases, costs less, is easier to install, and can cool a wide range of mainstream CPUs.

A 240mm AIO is usually enough if:

You use a mid-range or efficient gaming CPU

You mostly play games instead of running long all-core workloads

Your case has good airflow

You are not pushing heavy manual overclocks

You want a clean liquid-cooling look without using too much case space

For CPUs like mainstream Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7, Core i5, and many Core i7-class gaming builds, a quality 240mm AIO can be a smart balance. It gives you liquid-cooling aesthetics and solid thermal performance without forcing you into a larger case or higher budget.

When a 360mm AIO Makes Sense

A 360mm AIO is not just for show. It can be the right choice in the right system.

You should consider a 360mm AIO if:

You use a high-end CPU with high sustained power draw

You game, stream, and record at the same time

You also do rendering, video editing, AI workloads, or code compiling

You want lower fan noise under load

Your room temperature is high

Your case has proper 360mm radiator support

You want the visual style of a large radiator and triple-fan layout

High-end chips such as Ryzen 9 and Core Ultra 9-class CPUs can benefit from stronger cooling, especially outside pure gaming. Recent enthusiast CPUs can draw significant power in demanding workloads, and large AIOs help keep temperatures and noise more controlled.

A 360mm AIO can also help with acoustic comfort. Because it has more radiator surface area, the fans may not need to spin as fast to handle the same heat load. The result may not always be dramatically lower temperatures, but the PC can sound calmer during long sessions.

. Ideally, the radiator should be mounted higher than the pump so that any air collects in the radiator and doesn’t damage the pump.

Slowly tilt your PC case left and right to help dislodge air bubbles stuck in the tubing. This encourages the bubbles to move to the radiator, where they won’t interfere with the pump.

Use your cooler’s software to set the pump speed to 100% and let it run for 30–60 minutes. This increases fluid pressure in the loop and helps push out trapped air.

Step 4: Rotate the Case to Different Angles

If the bubbling noise persists, try rotating your case about 45 degrees in various directions. This can help release stubborn bubbles that haven’t yet settled.

⚠️ Pro Tip: Since these steps involve moving the PC, it’s a good idea to remove heavy components like the GPU and mechanical hard drives to avoid damage during handling.

What If the Bubbling Noise Doesn’t Stop?

If the noise continues even after these steps, your AIO cooler may have shipped with excess air or developed a leak. Contact the manufacturer’s support for further assistance or to request a replacement.

Both AIO (All-In-One) and custom loop liquid coolers are types of liquid cooling systems for computers. The main differences between them lie in cooling performance, ease of installation, and budget considerations. Understanding the distinctions between these two systems is crucial for choosing the right one for your needs.

AIO (All-In-One) Liquid Coolers

What is an AIO Liquid Cooler?

An All-In-One (AIO) Liquid Cooler is a pre-assembled, closed-loop liquid cooling system that includes a water block, pump, tubing, and radiator. It is designed to offer better cooling performance than traditional air coolers, helping CPUs maintain low temperatures under heavy workloads.

AIO coolers are low-maintenance and easy to install, making them very popular among DIY PC builders.

Components of an AIO Cooler

A typical AIO liquid cooler consists of the following components:

Water Block: Mounted on the CPU, it contains a copper base and an integrated pump, responsible for transferring heat from the CPU to the coolant.

Pump: Usually integrated into the water block (though some models have it on the tubing), it circulates the coolant through the loop.

Radiator: Transfers heat from the coolant to the air, typically using fans to aid the process.

Fans: Mounted on the radiator to help dissipate heat from the warm coolant.

Pros

Easy to install: Comes pre-assembled, so even beginners can install it with ease.

Maintenance-free: Sealed loop system that requires no refilling or cleaning during its lifespan.

Stable performance: Offers better cooling than most air coolers, especially for high-performance CPUs.

Clean aesthetics: Often features RGB lighting and stylish water block designs for visual appeal.

Cons

Limited lifespan: Pumps usually last 3–5 years; over time, coolant may evaporate and reduce cooling performance.

Non-serviceable: If any internal component fails, you must return it to the manufacturer for repair or replacement.

Custom Loop Liquid Cooling

What is a Custom Loop?

A custom loop liquid cooling system is an open-loop system that users build from individual components. Unlike AIO coolers, each part—such as the CPU block, reservoir, radiator, pump, tubing, and fittings—must be purchased and assembled separately.

Custom loops deliver top-tier cooling performance and maximum customization, but they are more complex to build, time-consuming, and costly to maintain.

Components of a Custom Loop

A typical custom loop includes the following:

CPU Block: Mounted on the CPU to absorb and transfer heat into the coolant.

Pump: Drives coolant through the entire loop.

Reservoir: Stores coolant, allows for easy monitoring of coolant levels, and helps with refilling and air removal.

Tubing: Carries coolant through the loop. Available in soft tubing and hard tubing options.

Coolant: Transfers heat and can be clear or colored for aesthetics.

Fittings: Connect tubing to components; ensure tight seals to prevent leaks.

Pros

Superior cooling performance: Can cool both CPU and GPU, ideal for heavy overclocking or workstation setups.

Highly customizable appearance: Use of hard tubing, distribution plates, colored coolant, and RGB lighting enables fully personalized aesthetics.

Scalability: Supports dual radiators, large reservoirs, multiple loops, and sensor integration.

Cons

High skill requirement: Requires knowledge of liquid cooling and hands-on assembly experience—not beginner-friendly.

Time-consuming installation: Can take hours or even days to complete; includes leak testing and air bleeding.

Expensive: Individual components can be costly—entire setups often cost hundreds of USD.

Higher risk: Improper installation can lead to coolant leaks and potential hardware damage.

Buying Recommendations

AIO Liquid Cooler: Ideal for regular gamers and users who want good cooling with minimal maintenance. Offers a balanced choice between performance and convenience.

Custom Loop Cooling: Best suited for enthusiasts who seek maximum performance and enjoy building PCs from the ground up. Offers unmatched cooling and aesthetics but demands time, skill, and budget.

How to Choose a Liquid Cooler: AIO vs. Custom Loop Cooling

オールインワン（AIO）冷却システムとカスタムループ冷却システムを比較して、お使いのPCに最適なものを見つけましょう。

水冷クーラーの選び方：一体型水冷システム vs. 自作ループ冷却システム

When your CPU is under heavy load, temperature spikes are inevitable. While traditional air coolers are budget-friendly, they often struggle to keep up with high-performance processors. That’s where liquid coolers come in — the go-to choice for gamers and power users alike.

But have you ever wondered what a liquid cooler actually is, and why it outperforms traditional air cooling systems?

A liquid cooler is a closed-loop system that circulates coolant to absorb and transfer heat away from the CPU. The coolant carries the heat to a radiator, where it's released into the air with the help of fans — all while maintaining high efficiency and low noise levels.

Liquid has a much higher thermal conductivity than air, allowing it to draw heat away from the CPU faster. This is especially beneficial for high-end CPUs or overclocked systems that generate a lot of heat.

Since liquid cooling is more efficient, fans don’t need to spin at high speeds to keep temperatures low. As a result, the system stays quieter during operation.

Liquid coolers often have a cleaner, more compact design compared to bulky air coolers. With modern additions like built-in screens on the water block and RGB fans, they add visual appeal and are perfect for gaming or showcase builds.

Liquid coolers can keep temperatures low even under extended high workloads, reducing the risk of thermal throttling and ensuring better system stability and performance over time.

Who Should Consider Getting a Liquid Cooler?

If you're running a top-tier processor, maintaining stable output and avoiding heat damage is key. A liquid cooler helps efficiently remove excess heat, keeping your CPU at safe operating temperatures.

While liquid coolers offer powerful performance, they do come with a limited lifespan (typically 5 to 8 years due to the use of coolant). Once the warranty ends, it's recommended to replace the cooler — making it slightly more maintenance-intensive than air coolers.

Liquid coolers now come in all kinds of designs, from minimalist to flashy. Some even include customizable screens on the water block. They’ve evolved from simple cooling tools into centerpiece components of high-end custom PC builds.

What Is a Liquid Cooler?

A liquid cooler is a closed-loop system that circulates coolant to absorb and transfer heat away from the CPU. The coolant carries the heat to a radiator, where it's released into the air with the help of fans — all while maintaining high efficiency and low noise levels.

How Does a Liquid Cooler Work?

Water Block (CPU Block)
Mounted directly on the CPU, the water block has a thermal metal base that makes contact with the CPU and coolant. Thermal paste is applied to enhance heat transfer from the CPU to the block.

Pump
The pump keeps the coolant circulating through the system.

Radiator
The heated coolant flows into the radiator, where large surface-area fins dissipate the heat.

Fans
Attached to the radiator, fans help expel the hot air from the case quickly and efficiently.

Advantages of Liquid Coolers

Superior Cooling Performance

Liquid has a much higher thermal conductivity than air, allowing it to draw heat away from the CPU faster. This is especially beneficial for high-end CPUs or overclocked systems that generate a lot of heat.

Quieter Operation

Since liquid cooling is more efficient, fans don’t need to spin at high speeds to keep temperatures low. As a result, the system stays quieter during operation.

Sleek and Stylish Aesthetics

Liquid coolers often have a cleaner, more compact design compared to bulky air coolers. With modern additions like built-in screens on the water block and RGB fans, they add visual appeal and are perfect for gaming or showcase builds.

Stable Long-Term Performance

Liquid coolers can keep temperatures low even under extended high workloads, reducing the risk of thermal throttling and ensuring better system stability and performance over time.

Who Should Consider Getting a Liquid Cooler?
